Panama canal:one of the two most strategic artificial waterways in the world

On 4 May in 1904 United States took over the construction of one of the most strategic artificial waterways in the world : Panama Canal.
Panama canal is an artificial lock type canal that connects Atlantic and Pacific Oceans through the narrow strait of Panama. This Canal is owned and managed by Republic of Panama. The length of Panama Canal is about 40 miles (65 km) from shore to shore and about 51 miles  ( 85 km ) from deep water in the Atlantic to the deep waters in the Pacific.

This canal is one of the two most strategic artificial waterways in the world. Ships sailing between the eastern and western coasts of the United States saves about 8000 miles (15000 km) using this canal. Ships sailing between the coast of the North America and South America saves about 3500 miles  (6500 km) using this canal . Ships sailing between Europe and Asia and Australia also saves about 2000 miles (3700 km) using this canal.

As United States built this canal in 1919 so this canal is maintained by US upto 1979.In 1979 the control of this canal is passed to Panama Canal Comission. In 1999 Republic of Panama took complete control over this canal.
